Ito-shime : Changing the string

The strings of Koto become worn out or loosen with time.

In such a case, we should ask the craftsman of Koto shop to change the strings.

There are two ways to change them.

One is called “Ara Ito”. It means “New String” in Japanese.

This way literally changes all to new strings.

The other one called “Tenchi”. This means “Upside Down”

On the picture, can you see the strings are rolled up roundly at the end?

The strings of Koto are very long. Usually, only half is used for playing.

The other half is rolled up as a spare for when it snaps off.

However, it is rare to use spare part.

So, in a way called “Tenchi (Upside Down)”, we use a spare part in exchange for the part we already used.

It is very difficult work to set all these long 13 strings to each good tension.

We always appreciate the craftsmen.
